Even in the most stylish and current of outfits, they’re the one item that is the most revealing. 

Unlike our clothes size, our shoes size is consistent. 

So buying a new pair will never give you body hang-ups.
What’s not to love about that? 

However, when it comes to buying new pairs we tend to stick to a formula depending on what our age is. 

The saying goes “You can tell a lot about a person by their shoes” but in reality they are telling of your age.

We all have our go-to safety shoes and that’s the big give away.

20s

If you’re in your twenties you’re more than likely wearing a pair of trainers. 

You’re in peak must-keep-up-with-the-trends mode and have a wardrobe full of trainers that would give Footasylum a run for their money. 

You alter between your Alexander McQueens, New Balance, Adidas Sambas and occasional Nike Air Force.

And who can blame you, when you should have been out and about living during your late teens or early twenties you were kept inside thanks to Covid-19.

You’ve become accustomed to comfort and are in no rush to get out of it. 

30s

Thirty year-olds are still clinging on to their heyday – and who can blame them. 

You’re often seen at work, the supermarket or on a night out in a pair of trusty block heel boots.

The heights may vary but they give you a little height and it’s the kind of shoe you can manage everything in. 

They’re reliable come rain or shine – summer or winter and you know exactly the toe shape, ankle length and heel height you need. 

40s

For forty-somethings the must have shoe is a Birkenstock.

Be it the real deal or a dupe from Primark they’re the slip that comes with fashion clout and comfort. 

You can rush around, balancing every plate as well as looking stylish in their wide sole with sturdy straps which mean you won’t fall head over heels.

For dressed up occasions you lean towards a classic court or an heeled sandal, but you’ll always be wishing you were in your Birks’. 

50s

Wedges are the one of the Marmites of the shoe world, you either love them or hate them.

But if you’re in your fifties you more than likely own one or more pairs. 

You’ve had enough of tottering in spindly heels, twisting your ankle and having sore soles, and want your shoes to be practical and comfortable.

You still like to look stylish in raffia textures with wrap around straps at the ankle, paired with flowing midi dresses – think Sophie Wessex, Duchess of Edinburgh. 

60s

If you want to get the most of your shoes, you’re likely to be a metallic shoe wearer in your sixties. 

Beit cut-out sandals with a slight support wedge and straps or FitFlop style trainers with a bright white sole and latticed foot covering, they’ll be metallic. 

They go with everything, even on days when you’re doing your grandparent duties outside the school gates or sunning yourself on holiday. 

They add a pop of glitz to all your looks without any effort.
