A leading commentator has brought up Meghan Markle’s previous interview comments regarding her maiden name and how she felt that “things had been taken away from her” and she had “almost lost her name” – sparking contradictions with Meghan’s views aired in her latest Netflix show.
The Daily Mail’s diary editor, Richard Eden, spoke on the show Palace Confidential. He said: “She [Meghan Markle] said things were taken away from her, and she had almost lost her name, and that seemed to be a reference to the Markle name which she was sad about losing. Now she’s saying ‘Don’t call me Markle’ and telling off friends for using the name. It’s quite odd behaviour.”
The commentator referred to the Oprah Winfrey interview conducted when Meghan and Prince Harry left the Royal Family in 2020 and later sat down with the US TV host. Sitting down with Oprah, Meghan said, “I nearly lost my name, there’s the loss of identity” when speaking about her time in the Firm.
In ‘With Love, Meghan’ which aired on March 4, comedian and Hollywood star Mindy Kaling joined the Duchess of Sussex for the second episode of the show, as Markle showed all of her tips and tricks for hosting a children’s party.
However, while the two were putting things together in the kitchen, fans caught what they believed to be an awkward moment between the two as Markle corrected Kaling on her last name.
“It’s so funny too, that you keep saying ‘Meghan Markle,'” The Duchess told Kaling. “You know I’m Sussex now,” she added.
Meghan’s insistence on using her title as a surname has caused a stir among royal watchers, with many questioning her decision to adopt ‘Sussex’ as her family name, especially in light of the couple’s limited connection to the country.
While members of the Royal Family are entitled to the style of HRH Prince or Princess and do not need to use their surname day to day, according to Buckingham Palace, the family’s name is Mountbatten-Windsor.
Meghan Markle also surprised fans as she simultaneously launched her new website brand ‘As Ever’ alongside her new Netflix show ‘With Love, Meghan’. Describing details of the brand on her site, Meghan wrote: “As ever is more than a brand – it’s a love language. Created by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, As ever welcomes you to a collection of products, each inspired by her long-lasting love of cooking, entertaining, and hostessing with ease.”
A royal author has also explained the “essential” reason behind Meghan continuing to use her title The Duchess of Sussex. Co-author of Royal Fever and Professor at Royal Holloway, University of London, Pauline MacLaran, exclusively told Express.co.uk that the use of her title has an important meaning. She said: “Meghan has continued to use her royal title since returning to the US and this is what draws an audience to her so it’s pretty essential in my view for her brand.
“Fans love the transformative story that underpins her marriage to Harry, the Cinderella story of getting her Prince. So I think it’s pretty important that she uses her royal title and, of course, she is allowed to do this as she is married to the Duke who is not going to stop using his title anytime soon!”
