Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands hosted Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia on his State Visit to The Netherlands on this day in 1954, 70 years ago, during his Tour of Europe following a State Visit to the United Kingdom and to Greece.
Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard greeted Emperor Haile Selassie at the Station in Amsterdam, before a Procession to the Royal Palace on Dam Square, where they appeared on the Palace Balcony, though the evening’s State Banquet was held privately.
The following evening, the Queen (wearing the Dutch Sapphire Tiara) and Prince joined the Emperor for a Reception hosted by the Dutch Government at the Ridderzaal in The Hague.
The Emperor, Queen (in the Dutch Diamond Bandeau) and Prince also attended a Gala Performance at the City Theatre in Amsterdam.
The Dutch Royal Family made a State Visit to Ethiopia in 1969.
