Queen Sonja of Norway joined the Danish Royal Family as they supported Queen Margrethe II of Denmark at the premiere of the restaging of the ballet classic The Nutcracker at the Tivoli Concert Hall in Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen on November 30th.
No fewer than five times did the Nutcracker’s set and costume designer, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe, curtsy alongside the rest of the team in front of the audience. On Saturday evening, November 30, the premiere of the restaging of Tivoli’s version of the ballet classic The Nutcracker took place at Tivoli’s Concert Hall in Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, Denmark. Queen Margrethe is responsible for designing the set design and the colorful costumes for the production.
The audience erupted in applause when Queen Margrethe and Peter Bo Bendixen, along with the ballet dancers and the rest of the production team, took to the stage for a standing ovation after the performance. Queen Margrethe and the entire cast curtsied and bowed before the audience five times, who also extended their applause to Tivoli Copenhagen Phil’s 68 musicians seated in the orchestra pit.
This marks the sixth time the production has been staged. New for 2024, Queen Margrethe has created three new costumes for The Nutcracker, representing three dancing spinning tops. Queen Margrethe will continue as set and costume designer at Tivoli Gardens in 2025, when the Christmas ballet The Snow Queen is revived.
Queen Margrethe, who served as Denmark’s monarch for 52 years before abdicating earlier this year, has been contributing to the arts at Tivoli Gardens since 2001. Over the years, she has designed costumes and sets for numerous ballets, many of them inspired by the beloved fairytales of Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.
The Nutcracker will be performed at Tivoli’s Concert Hall in Tivoli Gardens in the heart of the Danish capital Copenhagen until December 29 and is part of Christmas in Tivoli, which runs until January 5, 2025.
