Coronation of King George Tupou V of Tonga, 2008


Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and a Princess of Bhutan were among the Royal Guests who joined the Tongan Royal Family for the Coronation of King George Tupou V of Tonga in Nuku’alofa on this day in 2008. The King reigned for less than six years, and was succeeded by his younger brother, King Tupou VI of Tonga, who was crowned in 2015.

King George Tupou V of Tonga was Crowned in the presence of the Tongan Royal Family and Royal Guests in the Centenary Free Wesleyan Church in Nuku’alofa, followed by a Procession through the city of Nuku’alofa to the Royal Palace, where an Investiture was held. Other Events included Three Balls, a fireworks display, a military parade, traditional dancing, a rugby match and an open-air concert.

In the evening, Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (wearing the Iveagh Tiara), and a Princess of Bhutan joined King George Tupou V for a spectacular Royal Charity Concert in Nuku’alofa.
