Concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London, 1969

The Prince of Wales, his two Aunts, and Earl Mountbatten attended a Concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London on this day in 1969, 55 years ago, as Princess Irene of Greece made her debut as a Concert Pianist.

Princess Irene of Greece, the sister of the exiled King Constantine II, was taught to play the piano by the concert pianist Gina Bachauer and, made her British debut at the Royal Festival Hall, performing Bach’s Concerto No. 2. Newspapers at the time said;

‘Princess or not, she’s more than adequate player.’

The Prince of Wales was joined by his two Aunts, Princess Margarita of Hohenlohe-Langenburg and Princess Sophie of Greece and Hanover, and Earl Mountbatten to view the Concert.

Back from his engagements in Wales, Prince Charles is seen arriving at the Royal Festival Hall, London, with Admiral of the Fleet Earl Mountbatten of Burma. They were attending a royal occasion – Princess Irene of Greece making her debut as a pianist at the Festival Hall.
