A man has died and four people severely injured after a Colombian city Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently visited was rocked by an explosion.

The deflagration took place amid a protest in the El Tunel section of the route linking Popayan and Cali, some 450km southwest of the capital Bogota.

A paramedic called to the scene confirmed the victim was a 60-year-old man who lived near the area of the explosion. The route has served as a backdrop of blistering protests by Indigenous communities demanding a meeting with President Gustavo Petro.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in the city of Cali on August 18 after spending the first two days of the tour in Bogota.

The couple raised eyebrows with their decision to visit Colombia despite warning about potential threats to their safety.

Multiple countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States, have issued travel advisories because of the high rate of violent crime, including homicide and armed robbery.

Harry has been vocal about his security concerns for Meghan and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, since stepping down from his official royal role.

He launched a legal case against the Home Office lamenting their decision to downgrade his security details after he and Meghan chose to move their family to California in 2020.

Royal expert Hilary Fordwich previously told Express.co.uk: “Speaking of security. Colombia is ranked as one of the most dangerous countries in the world.

“The hypocrisy of saying you don’t feel safe in the UK, but you are willing to go to one of the most unsafe countries in the world.”

Only last month, Harry once again spoke of his fears for his family in the ITV documentary Tabloids on Trial. He said: “All it takes is for one lone actor who reads this stuff to act on what they’ve read.

“And whether it’s a knife or acid, these are things that are genuine concerns for me.”
