King Hussein and Queen Noor of Jordan hosted Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh on their first and only State Visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on this day in 1984, 40 years ago, following the Jordanian State Visit to the United Kingdom in 1966.
The Queen (in her Williamson Pink Diamond Brooch) and Duke of Edinburgh were received by King Hussein and Queen Noor of Jordan at Marka Airport in Amman, with a Guard of Honour, ahead of a Reception held for the British Community at the Ambassador’s Residence.
Amid heavy security, Queen Elizabeth II arrived in Jordan today on a state visit.
The Queen, who had never before visited here, declared in a toast at a state banquet given by Jordan’s ruler, King Hussein, ”This visit to Jordan fulfills a lifelong ambition.”
She praised the King as having made Jordan a ”beacon of stability” in the Middle East.
King Hussein, in his toast, said: ”This day will be recorded in the history of Jordan. It crowns the friendly relations between our two peoples and will be treasured for a long time to come.” The Palestinian Problem
Both sovereigns mentioned the Palestinian problem, an overriding issue in a nation that is 60 percent Palestinian and lost the West Bank to Israel in 1967.
King Hussein appealed to the ”justice of the British people” for their help in resolving ”the injustice arising from errors of the past.”
Queen Elizabeth said: ”My Government will continue to support all constructive efforts to achieve a peaceful, just and lasting solution to this problem.”
Sharpshooters stood watch on rooftops, security police were stationed every few hundred yards and soldiers ringed the field and lined the runway for the Queen’s arrival just before noon at Marka military airfield on the northern outskirts of Amman.
A 21-gun salute echoed from this ancient city’s seven hills as the Queen and her husband, Prince Philip, were greeted by King Hussein and his American-born wife, Queen Noor.
There was a brief rainshower as Queen Elizabeth, dressed in a pink wool coat and white straw hat, strode down the ramp while martial music played.
King Hussein, dressed in the uniform of Commander in Chief of the Jordanian Army – complete with red-and- white checked headdress but without his usual pistol – introduced the Queen to members of the Jordanian royal family and Government officials.
The two rulers stood at attention while their national anthems were played, reviewed a military honor guard, then sped off in a motorcade to lunch at the royal palace.
The Queen’s limousine was guarded by 12 red jeeps with mounted machine guns and six of King Hussein’s elite palace guard. The limousine, which usually slows down so the Queen can wave to bystanders, appeared to speed up when it passed groups of people on the way to the palace.
Later, soldiers and the police sealed off a half-mile stretch of an Amman boulevard as the Queen visited Queen Zein, the Queen Mother of Jordan, and gave a reception for several hundred members of the British community at the residence of the British Ambassadar.
In the evening, King Hussein (wearing the Order of the Bath) and Queen Noor (in her Diamond Tiara and the Order of Al-Hussein bin Ali) hosted a State Banquet for the Queen (wearing the Vladimir Tiara and the Order of Al-Hussein bin Ali) and Duke of Edinburgh (in the Supreme Order of the Renaissance) at the Raghadan Palace in Amman.
Other engagements during the State Visit included visits to Petra and Aqaba, a picnic on the Dead Sea, a tour of the Royal Stables, and a visit to the King Hussein Medical Center..
On Tuesday the Queen is expected to place a wreath at the tomb of Jordan’s unknown soldier, visit the royal stables and tour the Hussein Medical Center.
The five-day visit is also expected to take the Queen and Prince Philip to the port city of Aqaba and the 2,000-year-old ruin of Petra.
At the end of the State Visit, the Queen (wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara and the Jordanian Turquoise Suite) and Duke of Edinburgh also hosted a Return Banquet in honour of the Jordanian King and Queen (wearing her Diamond Tiara) at the British Embassy in Amman.
