Happy Birthday to Baroness Helle Reedtz-Thott, who turns 50 today! The Danish Lawyer and Chatelaine of Gavnø Castle who is a close friend of Queen Mary of Denmark and a godmother of Prince Vincent, Baroness Helle Reedtz-Thott acquired this striking Pearl and Diamond Tiara at Sotheby’s in 2018!
At the Sotheby’s Fine Jewels Sale in London on March 20 2018, a Pearl and Diamond Tiara of foliate design set with natural pearls and circular-cut and rose diamonds, in case stamped Carrington & Co, was auctioned with an estimate of 16,000 – 22,000 GBP. The condition report stated:
Largest pearl measuring approximately 11.1 x 9.5 x 8.9mm, smallest measuring approximately 5.5 – 5.6 x 7.5mm. Mounted in silver and gold. Pearls of white to cream body colour, some with green and rose overtones, medium to high lustre, of various shapes, some typical blemishes, growths marks, light scratches, pits and banding. Diamonds bright and lively, estimated total weight approximately 7.00-9.00 carats, estimated clarity I on average and mixed colours, as gauged within the limitations of the mount.
Signs of normal wear to metal, scratches and indentations consistent with use and age. Tiara fitting later soldered to headband. Areas on tiara fitting slightly bent, with evidence of solder repair to reverse of top central motif. Minor areas of discolouration, tarnish and solder to the reverse. Overall in good condition. Gross weight approximately 67.7 grams. Accompanied by case from Carrington & Co.
Two months after the sale, Baroness Helle Reedtz-Thott wore the Pearl and Diamond Tiara with her Sapphire and Diamond Earrings for Crown Prince Frederik’s 50th Birthday Gala Dinner at Christiansborg Palace.
Four years later, Baroness Helle Reedtz-Thott wore the Pearl and Diamond Tiara again for Queen Margrethe’s Golden Jubilee Gala at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen in 2022.
I had the pleasure of seeing the Tiara up close in person when the Baroness stopped right in front of me! There is no doubt the Pearl and Diamond Tiara will be worn for years to come!
