A very royal meeting as an emperor welcomes a king

King Carl Gustaf of Sweden was welcomed to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo by Emperor Naruhito of Japan during an important visit to the country.

The King of Sweden has been visiting Expo 2025 during an official visit to Japan and as his time in the country came to a close, he met the Emperor of Japan.

The Swedish king began his trip on 13 May and visited the Nordic Pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka. The pavilion is a shared project between the Nordic nations and has a theme of “Together Towards a Better Future”.

On May 14, King Carl Gustaf attended the inaugural Sweden Day at Expo 2025, making a speech there about the relationship between Sweden and Japan, where he noted “ in 2018, we celebrated 150 years of successful cooperation… our partnership has expanded across multiple fields, including business, science and innovation, and culture.”

King Carl Gustaf then took the high-speed train to Tokyo on May 15. He visited both the Swedish Ambassador’s home and the Swedish embassy where he was able to meet with staff.

That evening, Emperor Naruhito hosted a dinner for King Carl Gustaf at the Imperial Palace before the trip finished on May 16.
