Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway took a sparkling family gem and gave it a modern twist at a recent celebration. At King Harald’s 88th birthday gala, the second-in-line to the throne chose some spectacular and historic jewels.

The princess, 21, chose a pair of stunning earrings that belonged to her great grandmother, Crown Princess Märtha, for the black tie event. The earrings feature a large round pearl surrounded by diamonds suspended as a drop.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra also wore the earrings at Crown Prince Christian of Denmark’s 18th birthday gala

Märtha received the earrings as a wedding gift in 1929, though they were set with sapphires rather than pearls. Within a decade, the Crown Princess had decided to change the stones.

Crown Princess Märtha died in 1959 and her jewels were distributed amongst her children; Princess Ragnhild received these earrings and wore them many times. It has not been confirmed whether or not her children still own the earrings and have loaned them to Ingrid Alexandra.

The pearl earrings were not the only showstopper, though. Princess Ingrid Alexandra also wore a diamond necklace that originally belonged to Queen Maud, her great-great grandmother. The riviere-style necklace features graduated, round diamonds.

Ingrid Alexandra received her first tiara, the Boucheron Pearl Circle Tiara, in 2022 as a birth present, and she has continued to choose fitting and gorgeous jewels as she takes on more as a royal.
