A first birthday as King for Frederik X


King Frederik has celebrated another milestone as he marked his first birthday as King. 

The new Danish King celebrated his 56th birthday on May 26th 2024 and spent the day with his family.

King Frederik and Queen Mary were joined on the balcony at Frederik VIII’s Palace, Amalienborg Castle by their four children: Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine. The former Danish Queen, Queen Margrethe, also joined the family. 

Queen Mary and Queen Margrethe both chose bright pink dresses for the day.

Frederik was born on 26 May 1968 to the then-Crown Princess Margrethe and Prince Henrik. He grew up with a younger brother, Prince Joachim. 

The Danish Crown Prince completed an undergraduate degree in political studies at Aarhus University including a year of studies at Harvard University. He later completed his MSc in political studies at Aarhus University. He also completed training in all three branches of the military.

He met Australian Mary Donaldson at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. The couple married in May 2004; Prince Christian was born in 2005, Princess Isabella was born in 2007, and Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine were born in 2011. 

Frederik ascended the throne in January 2024 upon his mother’s abdication.
