Although he is not even two years old, Prince François of Luxembourg stole the limelight from one of the world’s best known figures, Pope Francis.
Prince François accompanied his parents, Prince Guillaume and Princess Stéphanie, and his brother, Prince Charles, when Pope Francis visited the Grand Ducal Palace and met with the Grand Ducal Family.
The young prince spent much of the visit in his mother’s arms before doing what very few people can do in front of His Holiness and bolting across the room.
He did briefly shake Pope Francis’ hand and then made off with a piece of candy (which few people can say they’ve received from a pope).
Prince François was born on 27 March 2023 at the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg. His elder brother, Prince Charles, was born on 10 May 2020. Charles is second in line for the Luxembourgish throne while Prince François is third in line.
Their father, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, will be moving into a new crucial role in October. As the family announced in June 2024, on 8 October Guillaume will be officially appointed as Lieutenant- Representative for his father, meaning that he will effectively be his father’s regent and assume most of his constitutional duties.
