The special meanings behind the jewellery choices of Queen Camilla and the Princess of Wales on the anniversary of VE Day

The Royal Family took part in the VE Day events, sitting with veterans on a special stage to watch a spectacular ceremonial procession along The Mall before heading to the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch a flypast. Although they are always more than suitably attired, The Queen and the Princess of Wales both chose particularly poignant pieces of jewellery for this very important day.

Queen Camilla wore a bright, sapphire blue coat dress and coordinating hat for the day. She paired it with the 12th Royal Lancers Brooch.

Her Majesty’s late father, Major Bruce Shand, joined the regiment after he graduated from Sandhurst. In 1940, he was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery, and in 1942, he was promoted to the Military Cross and Bar.

The Princess of Wales also chose a piece of jewellery with a close family connection. She wore a gold RAF brooch of wings. Her paternal grandfather, Peter Middleton, served in the RAF during the Second World War. (He also was the Duke of Edinburgh’s co-pilot on a 1966 trip through South America.)

Catherine chose to re-wear a previous ensemble, one from the 2022 South African State Visit. She wore a purple, custom-made coat dress from Emilia Wickstead, as well as a coordinating Sean Barrett pillbox hat.
