How many royals does it take to plant a tree? Four and counting appears to be the answer….

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden have joined King Charles and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle to fulfil a promise made at the time of the Coronation.

This very royal quartet met at Windsor Castle after King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia offered the gift of a tree to mark the 2023 Coronation and popped in on their friend and relation to help plant it.

The tree is a Swedish oak that has been grown at the Royal Nurseries at Solliden Palace, the Swedish Royal Family’s summer home.

Both King Charles and King Carl Gustaf prepared the ground for the new tree, with the Swedish monarch using a spade that his great-grandfather, King Gustaf V, used in 1908 when he also planted a tree at Windsor.

Queen Camilla and Queen Silvia were also there for gardening support, with each queen helping to water the new sapling. Their watering cans were delivered by equerries in full uniform, adding another rather regal touch.

The King and Queen will be celebrating the second anniversary of their Coronation on 6 May. The day itself will see Queen Camilla at the Tower of London where she will officially open a new display of ceramic poppies, planted there for the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will be joined by the Royal Family for a balcony appearance 8 May, the actual 80th anniversary of VE Day.

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia had their own balcony appearance on 30 April when the Swedish monarch celebrated his 79th birthday.
