A lesser-known member of the Royal Family is celebrating a special birthday today as he turns 18. Xan Windsor, who holds the title of Lord Culloden, is the son of Alexander Windsor, Earl of Ulster, and the grandson of two full-time working members of the Royal Family – the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
While Xan, whose full name is Xan Richard Anders Windsor, lives a relatively ordinary life now as a result of being far down the line of succession, he is one day expected to inherit the Duke of Gloucester title. This is currently held by his grandfather, Prince Richard, who is the late Queen Elizabeth II’s first cousin.
Prince Richard is also the grandson of King George V and Queen Mary, allowing himself, his children, and his grandchildren to use the last name Windsor.
Although most of Xan’s life is relatively normal and out of the public eye, he has been at a number of high-profile royal events over the years.
This includes the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, where he was pictured alongside his mother Claire Windsor, Countess of Ulster, and his sister, Lady Cosima Windsor.
The young royal has also been spotted arriving for the pre-Christmas royal lunch held at Buckingham Palace over the years, which is used by the Royal Family as a chance to get the wider family together.
Under Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, Xan was also spotted on the Buckingham Palace balcony a handful of times along with other lesser-known royal relatives.
While Xan’s life at the moment is out of the public eye, it is not known whether this will change in years to come when he inherits the Duke of Gloucester title.
While he is expected to one day hold the Dukedom, there will be one major change as both he and his father will be styled as ‘His Grace The Duke of Gloucester’, rather than ‘His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester’.
This is down to the fact that Alexander is a great-grandson of a sovereign and is therefore not entitled to a royal title.
