An expert has revealed what they claim is the reason Prince Harry decided to settle his court case against News Group Newspapers (NGN) after previously saying he wouldn’t.
The Duke of Sussex settled his cause against Rupert Murdoch’s NGN on Wednesday alongside fellow claimant and former deputy leader of the Labour Party, Tom Watson.
Journalist and royal commentator Amanda Platell has suggested possible reasons for this outcome, with Harry and Meghan’s other ventures going on in the background.
She wrote for MailOnline: “Was he worried that a drawn-out battle would overshadow Meghan’s new Netflix cooking show, ‘With Love, Meghan’, due to launch on March 4?
“After all, with the passionate yet not-so-bright Duke in the witness box, the headlines about Harry and the press might have eclipsed everything about Meghan in the kitchen.
“And the Sussexes, with their multi-millionaire lifestyle in California, are said to be pinning their financial hopes on the new show after the collapse of their $20 million Spotify deal.”
Prince Harry and Mr Watson settled for over £10 million and an apology from The Sun, and Ms Platell suggested the staggering sum may have been the deciding factor due to the monumental legal fees.
She continued: “The matter of finances brings us to the other reason Harry might have settled. Experts believe the vast bulk of his payout could be swallowed by legal fees.
“Could the Sussexes actually have afforded to go through weeks in court, with the costs mounting day by day? Who knows? But Harry’s out of court settlement does seem to make sense – if you just follow the money.”
The landmark case resulted in NGN admitting for the first time that there were “incidents of unlawful activities carried out by private investigators working for The Sun”.
Prince Harry also accused his father King Charles’s staff of “seemingly blocking our every move” to keep the media “on side in order to smooth the way for my stepmother, and father, to be accepted by the British public as Queen Consort and King respectively”.
He said his determination to fight the tabloids fractured his relationship with his family, but he claimed the late Queen wanted him to see his battle against tabloid newspapers “to the end.”
The Duke told ITV: “She knew how much this meant to me and … she’s very much out there, going ‘See this through to the end’, without question.”
