Today marks the 60th Anniversary of the Death of 6th Marchioness of Sligo, who passed away not his day in 1965! The magnificent Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara of the Marchioness of Sligo was worn for two Coronations before being sold before the 1953 Coronation!
The striking Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara featuring large Diamond Palmettes set within smaller Lilies was created by Garrard before the turn of the century for the Marquesses of Sligo based at Westport House in County Mayo.
In 1902, the Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara was worn by the 5th Marchioness of Sligo for the Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911.
The 6th Marchioness of Sligo wore the Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara for the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937, where she joined her son, the 7th Marquess.
After the deaths of the 7th Marquess, and his uncles the 8th Marquess and 9th Marquess, the Diamond Honeysuckle Tiara from the collection of the Marquess of Sligo was auctioned off at Christie’s (18 March 1953). Its current location is unknown, but other heirlooms inherited by Doreen, Baroness Brabourne, daughter of the 6th Marquess and Marchioness, were auctioned in 2021.
