Queen Mary of Denmark has chosen to mark the end of her first year as queen in a truly majestic style – by creating a new tiara out of a historic chain and pendant!
The Danish Royal Family shared a behind the scenes peek of its creation as the new queen tried on the new tiara.
The diadem has been made from a set called the rose stone which was first created in the 1840s, and included a piece called the Gürtel. It was made of a chain of rose diamonds and a diamond pendant worn about the waist.
Queen Louisa was the last Danish Queen to wear this particular piece from the rose stone set. Queen Margrethe seldomly wore pieces from this set.
Queen Mary has had the largest of the rose diamonds set onto a frame to make a bandeau-style tiara. By choosing this style, the original chain is still invoked.
Her Majesty will also be able to wear the pendant, as it can be divided and worn as separate brooches.

This tradition of bringing new life to older pieces is more than familiar in the Danish Royal Family. The country’s queens have often altered the jewel collection to modernise it and to put their own stamp on the gems when they take on their care.
In a fascinating video, shared on the official social media channels, the chain is seen being set on to a frame so that Queen Mary can try it on. You have to appreciate a messy bun paired with a tiara, she is just like us!
