Eight Kings and Eleven Queens led the Royal Guests and Relatives from around the world at the Wedding of King Constantine II of Greece and Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark in Athens on this day in 1964, 60 years ago, amidst weeks of festivities in Copenhagen and Athens, which began with a Gala in Copenhagen, a Farewell Dinner at Fredensborg Palace, a Dinner in Athens, and the spectacular Wedding Ball at the Royal Palace of Athens.
The Wedding of King Constantine II of Greece and Princess Anne Marie of Denmark took place at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Annunciation in Athens, and was performed by Archbishop Chrysostomos, the Primate of Greece.
Part of the ceremony involved crowns being held over the heads of the couple, first by Queen Frederica, and then by Crown Prince Harald of Norway, Crown Prince Carl Gustaf of Sweden, The Prince of Wales, Prince Michael of Greece, Crown Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia, Prince Ingolf of Denmark, Prince Michael of Kent, Prince Karl of Hesse and Count Michael Bernadotte. The bridesmaids included Princess Anne of the United Kingdom, Princess Christina of Sweden, Princess Irene of Greece, Crown Princess Margareta of Romania, Princess Tatiana Radziwiłł, and Princess Clarissa of Hesse.
After the ceremony, the couple rode in a carriage procession back to the Royal Palace of Athens, where a wedding breakfast was held for 80 guests. Soon afterwards, the King and his new Queen left to begin their honeymoon in Corfu.
Queen Anne Marie wore a simple gown by Danish designer Jørgen Bender with Princess Margaret of Connaught’s Irish lace veil and the Khedive of Egypt Tiara, which has been worn by all of Queen Ingrid’s female descendants and was inherited by Queen Anne Marie in 2000, as well as a striking Diamond Cross.
