Princess Christina’s Sapphire Necklace – The Royal Watcher

Princess Christina’s Sapphire Necklace – The Royal Watcher

Happy Birthday of Princess Christina of Sweden, Mrs Magnuson who turns 81 today! The youngest ‘Haga Princess’ who once served as ‘First Lady’ of the Swedish Court for her grandfather and brother, Princess Christina has worn several spectacular Royal Heirlooms but her own collection includes this versatile Sapphire and Diamond Necklace!

While the exact origin of this versatile Sapphire and Diamond Necklace, which can be worn with at least two pendants or none at all, is unknown, we believe that it may be among the gifts received by Princess Christina upon her marriage to Tord Magnuson in 1974, 50 years ago!

During the 1970s and 1980s, Princess Christina was often pictured wearing her Sapphire and Diamond Necklace for all manner of Galas, Banquets and Nobel Prize Ceremonies, often paired with either her Pearl and Diamond Tiara, the Four-Button Tiara or even the Napoleonic Cut Steel Tiara.

In 2002, Princess Christina wore the Sapphire and Diamond Necklace with her Pearl and Diamond Tiara for the Wedding of Princess Märtha Louise of Norway.

Over the decades, Princess Christina has worn her Sapphire and Diamond Necklace for numerous Banquets and Nobel Prize Ceremonies, usually paired with her Pearl and Diamond Tiara as well as the Six-Button Tiara or Four-Button Tiara, as well as an antique Sapphire and Diamond Brooch which she has often worn with the Necklace.

At the Nobel Prize Ceremony in 2013, Princess Christina wore the Sapphire and Diamond Necklace with a larger Sapphire and Diamond Pendant of unknown origin, which had not been previously seen.

After the theft of the Pearl and Diamond Tiara and a few other jewels in 2012, the Sapphire and Diamond Necklace became one of the few remaining jewels still in Princess Christina’s personal possession.

Princess Christina continues to wear her Sapphire and Diamond Necklace to this day, most recently pairing it, without any pendants, with the Six-Button Tiara at the King’s Dinner for Nobel Laureates at the Royal Palace of Stockholm last December. There is no doubt we will continue to see this versatile jewel worn for years to come!
