Royalty from around Europe have joined Heads of State from around the World to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp in Poland on January 27th. Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest concentration and extermination camp during the Second World War.
Auschwitz-Birkenau, known as the largest concentration and extermination camp of Nazi Germany, was liberated by the Soviet army on January 27, 1945. Following a United Nations resolution, this date was declared International Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2005.
The annual commemoration is attended by former prisoners and Holocaust survivors. The ceremony also commemorates other victims of the Nazi period. The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum organizes the commemoration.
