Why Queen Elizabeth stepped in to give Prince Louis a higher royal title – but didn’t for Meghan Markle’s son Archie

THERE have been many conversations around titles in the royal family in the past few years.

With the death of the late Queen Elizabeth, Britain now has a new King and New Prince and Princess of Wales.

But as time goes on titles move down the line of succession, unless someone steps in to change them.

What many people don’t know is that the late Queen stepped in to make sure that some of her grandchildren would have an official title contrary to popular tradition.

Prince Louis Arthur Charles who is the third child of William and Kate is fourth in line for the throne one place ahead of Prince Harry.

It is believed the young prince was named after Lord Louis Mountbatten who played a key role in mentoring both Charles and the late Prince Phillip.

Lord Mountbatten was tragically killed in an IRA bombing in 1979.

When William and Kate welcomed their third child on April 23 2018 it was rumoured that he wasn’t originally supposed to have a title.

It is believed the late monarch stepped in to overwrite a rule that had been put in place by her grandfather King George V, according to the Express.

In 1917 George set guidance that only the direct grandchildren of the Monarch would have royal titles in the style of an HRH.

At the time this would have only applied to Prince William and Prince Harry who were sons of the Prince of Wales. The official letters also stated that great grandchildren of the prince of Wales would be styled as befits of a Royal Duke.

This would cause a problem because a future King of England would not outrank other Princes like Harry despite being ahead in the line of succession.

The late Queen stepped in to restore an old decree originally put forward by her great-great grandmother Queen Victoria which stated all grandchildren of the Prince of Wales would receive an HRH title.

The late Queen also made this rule genderless which means Princess Charlotte was given a title and is included in the line of succession ahead of her little brother Prince Louis.

Without this intervention Prince Louis would have become either Master Louis Cambridge or Master Louis Windsor instead.

Of course this raised speculation for the titles of Prince Harry’s two children who, although were still in the line of succession, were not expected to receive titles. Of course this raised speculation for the titles of Prince Harry’s two children who, although were still in the line of succession, were not expected to receive titles.

It was believed both Harry and Meghan didn’t wish for their son to be given an HRH title in hopes that he may lead a more normal life similar to Harry’s cousins Zara Tindall and Peter Phillps.

But then safety concerns were raised as without an HRH title the young Prince Archie would not be given the same level of security as his three cousins.

But after the Queen’s death in September last year, her eldest son Charles ascended the throne and both of Harry and Meghan’s children, Archie and Lilibet now use the titles Prince and Princess.
