Prince Ricardo De La Cerda
The lavish wedding of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones at Westminster Abbey was an historic event- it was the first royal wedding to be broadcast on television, and was watched by over 300,000,000 people. What is not typically talked about is some of the truly interesting gifts that the couple received!
Unsurprisingly for a princess known for her impressive jewellery collection, Princess Margaret received an eighteen carat, uncut diamond from the people of Sierra Leone. The diamond was presented in a silver case dating back to the Georgian era.
Canada also gave the couple an appropriately patriotic gift, a set of furniture created from Canadian Pine, as well as a piece of Inuit furniture.
The village of Matlock Bath gave the couple a joint gift of jewellery made from Blue John stone; the groom received a set of cuff-links while the Princess received a pair of earrings and a bracelet.
Given Her Royal Highness’ penchant for fashion, the Diplomatic Corps certainly nailed their wedding gift with a sparkling golden style statement. They gave her an evening bag made of gold and silver thread interwoven that closes with a crystal clasp set with diamonds.
The fashionable princess wore a dramatic Norman Hartnell gown for the royal wedding ceremony, as well as her own personal tiara, the Poltimore Tiara.
