Sapphire is the birthstone of September and features in many royal jewellery vaults. The Luxembourg Grand Ducal Family may have one of the most unique sapphire tiaras.
Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte’s Art Deco Sapphire Necklace is a convertible piece that can be worn either as a tiara or a necklace. It features three square elements with a large cabochon-cut sapphire set into the central element in an Art Deco design. The central sapphire element can be worn separately as a pendant and the two side elements can be worn as brooches.

It is unclear which jeweller created this piece but Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte began wearing it in the early 1980s. She wore the Art Deco Sapphire Necklace as a tiara in one of her official portraits. She also wore it in either tiara or necklace form to several state events, including King Carl Gustaf XVI’s 50th birthday celebrations in 1996 and Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee Dinner that was held at Windsor Castle.
After Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte’s death in 2005, Grand Duchess Maria Theresa has chosen the Art Deco Sapphire Necklace for several state and family events. Maria Theresa has only worn the piece as a necklace, though- she has yet to wear it in its tiara form.
