It’s a royal repeat as the wedding of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima is set to feature prominently in the Dutch television series Máxima.

In an interview with Variety magazine, one of the preeminent entertainment trade magazines, Máxima’s show creators revealed that the royal wedding would be a major plotline for the second season.

“In the first episode, she thinks: ‘O.K, I’m getting married. I can pick my own dress.’ But suddenly, there are 20 people deciding what her dress should look like,” said producer Rachel van Bommel. She added that, “In Season 2, you see Queen Beatrix giving up a lot. That’s what she teaches Maxima. Being a queen is not just a job. It never stops.”

The first image of the second season was released alongside the interview, a photo of the actors portraying Queen Máxima and King Willem-Alexander at the altar on their wedding day. The famous Valentino wedding gown has been recreated for the scene, though van Bommel says in the interview that archival footage will also be used to achieve the grandiosity and nostalgia of the day.

In the first season finale, Willem-Alexander proposed to Máxima and the Dutch government begins its investigation into Máxima’s father for possible crimes committed during the Dirty War.

The logline for Máxima’s second season reads: “Máxima experiences that it is not as easy to retain the love of the Dutch people as it was to win it. As a passionate Argentine, she must navigate between her ambitions and the new family dynamics, trying to define her position within the rigid frameworks and strict protocols of the royal house. We follow her from the preparations for the wedding to the coronation ten years later, during which, through trial and error, she will develop into a queen.”

The second season will cover the royal wedding, the birth of all three daughters, Máxima’s royal work and UN role, and the preparations for Willem-Alexander’s accession in 2013.

The actor portraying the king, Martijn Lakemeier, said that Máxima’s character is “finding a way to balance everything, from motherhood to trying to make a difference and doing important work. It’s a pretty intense and hectic role to fulfill.”

Delfina Chaves, who portrays Queen Máxima, said that “If you look at the actual king and queen, what really binds them is their humor. I think the response [to the series] has been good and it might actually offer some insight into their humanity. I think it could be good for the royal family. I hope so.”

Máxima is produced by Millstreet Films and premiered in 2024. Its first season charted the early years of Máxima Zorreguieta growing up in Argentina through to her meeting Prince Willem-Alexander in 1999.

The second season of Máxima is set to premiere on Videoland in 2026.
