The Princess of Wales popped up as the surprise guest to open Children in Need evening.

As months of fundraising culminated in a packed TV special to raise money for young people across the UK and abroad, the Princess shared a special message with millions of viewers.

Speaking to all those who have given up their time to bring in funds for a wide range of projects, Catherine said ”best of luck to all those taking part in challenges and the incredible fundraising effort.”

The Princess of Wales joined the programme just days after hosting a national symposium on early years. In her special Children in Need message, Her Royal Highness said the special show ”is all about helping to support, champion and empower all children to be the very best they can be, which is crucial for their future health and happiness.’

”Our relationships, surroundings and experiences during the earliest years lay the foundations that shape the rest of our lives. And yet sadly, we know that for too many people, stressful and traumatic situations in early childhood can cause harm and it can take many years to overcome. It is vital, therefore, that we nurture every childhood and why the sorts of projects supported by Children in Need are so important.”

Children in Need began in 1980 to raise money for projects supporting disadvantaged young people. For many years, it was hosted by Sir Terry Wogan. Its mascot is Pudsey Bear who features in many of the fundraising projects.

In the past 43 years, it has brought in over £1 billion. Fundraising takes place across months and culminates in a special TV programme on BBC One which sees viewers pledge money for the projects. The broadcast brought in over £35 million in six hours and the total will continue to rise.
