The Prince of Wales has celebrated the country’s national day, St. David’s Day, in Welsh.

Prince William recorded a special message in Welsh to mark March 1st in a first of his own. This is the heir to the throne’s debut in full on Welsh speaking.

While the Prince has greeted people in Welsh before, he’s never been heard making a more formal address in the language.

In his message, shared on official royal social media channels, Prince William said that on St. David’s Day ”we celebrate everything that is magical about Wales”.

Whether his accent needed work remains to be seen but he ended his special celebration by saying ”to the people of Wales and everybody around the world, Happy St David’s Day.”

It’s understood Prince William isn’t taking formal Welsh lessons, as King Charles did when Prince of Wales, but has been learning the language himself with reports that he’s turned to the Duolingo app to help him master it.

A few days earlier, the Prince and Princess of Wales visited Pontypridd, their first joint engagement to the country since Catherine underwent treatment for cancer.

During their time in Ponty, the couple met some of those impacted by the flooding which hit the area last year. They also made Welsh cakes and visited a community garden.

St. David’s Day was marked by celebrations across Wales.
