Queen Elizabeth II’s groom, Terry Pendry, has shared a poignant revelation just days before the second anniversary of Her Late Majesty’s death.
Pendry appeared on author and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth’s podcast, Rosebud, this week where he shared one of Queen Elizabeth II’s most touching goodbyes before her passing at Balmoral Castle on 8 September 2022. He spoke about the moment she said goodbye to her beloved pony, Emma.
On 18 July 2022, Queen Elizabeth II was out for a ride at Windsor Castle and Pendry walked alongside her and Emma instead of riding. When she asked Pendry to take a picture of her and Emma, he joked, “’Your pony is 26, you’re 96, that has to be a record!”.
Queen Elizabeth returned to the Windsor Mews the next day to chat with Pendry and say goodbye to Emma, her pony of fifteen years. The late Queen was about to go to Balmoral for the summer and her groom said he thinks she knew it was actually a final farewell to her beloved pony.
Emma played an important but heartbreaking role in the late Queen’s funeral. Pendry was waiting outside at Windsor Castle for the procession to arrive from the State Funeral at Westminster Abbey.
The world watched as Pendry and Emma stood solemnly as Queen Elizabeth II returned to Windsor one last time. Touchingly, one of Queen Elizabeth’s headscarves was tied to Emma’s saddle as a thoughtful tribute.
