He’ll become the first King of Canada to deliver the Speech from the Throne at the State Opening of Parliament, and now Buckingham Palace has released more details about King Charles and Queen Camilla’s upcoming visit to Ottawa.
The King and Queen will undertake a two-day visit to Canada’s capital from 26-27 May at the invitation of Prime Minister Mark Carney, who invited the King to give the Speech from the Throne shortly after his election at the end of April.
After arriving in Ottawa on Monday, King Charles and Queen Camilla will attend a community event that showcases the “rich cultural heritage and diversity of Canada” that will allow them to meet many Canadians from a variety of organisations.
Following this, King Charles will meet with Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, the Governor General, and Prime Minister Carney.
Queen Camilla will be sworn in as a member of the Canadian Privy Council by her husband in a brief ceremony. The Canadian Privy Council is composed of current and former cabinet ministers and prominent Canadians and advises the King about Canadian issues.
Following this ceremony, the King and Queen will plant a tree on the grounds of Rideau Hall, the official residence of the Governor General, near the sugar maple tree they’d previously planted in 2017 as Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.
Their final engagement on Monday will see the King and Queen host a reception for the Lieutenant Governors and Territorial Commissioners of the Canadian provinces and territories. There are 10 provinces (Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia) and three territories (Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and Yukon).
A Lieutenant Governor is the King’s representative in each province, appointed by the Governor General on the recommendation of the Prime Minister; a Territorial Commissioner carries out many of the same duties, but is not a vice-regal appointment and is instead appointed by the Governor-in-Council.
On Tuesday, the King and Queen will attend the State Opening of the Parliament of Canada, where King Charles will deliver the Speech from the Throne.
While King Charles is the first king to give the Speech from the Throne in Canada, he’s not the first Sovereign to do so. Queen Elizabeth II delivered the Speech from the Throne twice, on 14 October 1957 during her first official visit to Canada; and on 18 October 1977 during her Silver Jubilee year.
Before departing Canada, King Charles and Queen Camilla will visit the National War Memorial to place a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior.
This will be King Charles’s first Canadian visit since becoming Sovereign; his most recent visit celebrated Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. He has visited Canada a total of 20 times, while Queen Camilla has visited six times.
