The King becomes the first monarch to ride on horseback at Trooping the Colour since 1986 – Royal Central

The King has become the first reigning monarch to ride in Trooping the Colour on horseback since 1986.

King Charles, who is 74-years-old, decided to ride in the parade instead of travelling to Horse Guards Parade in a carriage.

Queen Elizabeth II was the last monarch to ride at Trooping nearly 40 years ago in 1986.

The King was joined on horseback by the royal Colonels – the Prince of Wales, Colonel of the Welsh Guards, and the Princess Royal, Gold Stick in Waiting and Colonel, The Blues and Royals.

The Duke of Edinburgh also rode for the first time at the ceremony in his role as Colonel of the 1st Battalion London Guards.

The Queen and the Princess of Wales were amongst the family members to arrive at Horse Guards by carriage, arriving alongside Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louise

Also arriving by carriage as the Duchess of Edinburgh and Sir Tim Laurence, and the Duke & Duchess of Gloucester.

The Duke of Kent arrived at Horse Guards by car.

This is the first Trooping the Colour of King Charles III’s reign following on from the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

Saturday’s events also marked the first full-scale birthday parade in four years, with the previous three ceremonies being disrupted either due to the coronavirus pandemic, or altered because of the Platinum Jubilee.
