We take a look at the godparents of each of Europe’s heirs.

The Prince of Wales

Prince William was born on 21 June 1982 and christened on 4 August of that year.

His godparents were the late King Constantine of Greece (a cousin), Princess Alexandra of Kent (cousin), the Duchess of Westminster, then Lord Romsey (cousin), Lady Susan Hussey and Sir Laurens van der Post.

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark

Crown Prince Frederik was born on 26 May 1968 and was christened on 24 June of that year.

His godparents are Count Etienne de Laborde de Monpezat (his paternal uncle), Queen Anne-Marie of Greece (his maternal aunt), Prince Georg of Denmark (his maternal cousin), Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte of Luxembourg (a maternal relative), Baron Christian de Watteville-Berckheim, and Birgitta Juel Hillingsø (a friend and classmate of Queen Margrethe’s at N Zahle’s School).

Crown Prince Haakon of Norway

Crown Prince Haakon was born on 20 July 1973 and was christened on 20 September later that year.

His godparents are King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden (his paternal cousin), Queen Margrethe of Denmark (his paternal cousin), King Olav V of Norway (his paternal grandfather), Princess Astrid, Mrs Ferner (his paternal great-aunt), Prince Carl Bernadotte (his paternal cousin), and The Princess Royal (his paternal cousin).

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden

Crown Princess Victoria was born on 14 July 1977 and was christened on 27 September of that year.

Her godparents are King Harald of Norway (her paternal cousin), Ralf Sommerlath (her maternal uncle), Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands, and Princess Désirée, Baroness Silfverschiöld (her paternal aunt).

The Duchess of Brabant

Princess Elisabeth of Belgium was born on 25 October 2001, and she was christened on 9 December of that year.

Her godparents are Archduke Amedeo of Austria-Este (her paternal cousin) and Countess Hélène d’Udekem d’Acoz (her maternal aunt).

The Princess of Asturias

Princess Leonor of Spain was born on 31 October 2005, and she was christened on 14 January 2006.

Her godparents are her maternal grandparents, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía.

The Princess of Orange

Dutch Princess Catharina-Amalia was born on 7 December 2003, and she was christened on 12 June 2005.

Her godparents are Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Prince Constantijn (her paternal uncle), Herman Tjeenk Willink (the then-vice president of the Council of State of the Netherlands), Samantha Deane (a friend of Queen Máxima), Martín Zorreguieta (her maternal uncle), and Marc ter Haar (a friend of King Willem-Alexander).

The Hereditary Prince of Monaco

Prince Jacques was born on 10 December 2014, two minutes after his twin sister, Princess Gabriella. The twins were christened on 10 May 2015.

Prince Jacques’s godparents are Christopher Le Vine Jr (his paternal cousin) and Diane de Polignac Nigra.
