The Crown season six, part one saw Prince Charles (played by Dominic West) and Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) navigating their relationship as divorced parents.
The pair seemed to work better as friends and there was almost a warmth between the couple with Prince Charles saying he hoped they would be better at being divorced parents than when they were married.
However, Diana seemed to make some throwaway comments suggesting she had lost the man she’d loved and he would be a better friend now.
In an exclusive interview with Daily Express, historian and royal expert Marlene Koenig said: “I think they came to an understanding.
“I think she was aware that Camilla was the one and she wasn’t.

“But the thing was they actually met the day of the Decree Nisi not the Absolute and they actually talked and met and sat down and Diana told a reporter – and I remember this – after this she wished she could have made their love letters public because she knew Charles loved her in the beginning.
“But it was never meant to be. It was an arranged marriage. But they hadn’t had time to get to know each other, court each other.”
The royal expert added: “They learned a lot from that mistake.”
Koenig suggested this had led to a change in how marriage was viewed in the Royal Family.
Since then Prince William and Princess Katherine lived together for 10 years before tying the knot with Prince Edward and Sophie of Wessex in a similar situation, allowing those new to the customs and protocols having time to adjust to life inside the firm.
The author went on to explain the limited amount of time Princes William and Harry had with each of their parents.
She said: “Charles and Diana only saw their children 40 days a year each.”
Adding: “That doesn’t mean they didn’t keep in touch with their parents, it’s just how it worked out when you’re separated.”
There’s now a wait for the second half of the season to drop, which will deal more with Camilla’s (Olivia Williams) relationship with the Royal Family.
