Swedish National Day 2023

The Swedish Royal Family celebrated Sweden’s National Day and Swedish Flag Day with a series of events on June 6th, with this year also marking the 500th Anniversary of Sweden as an independent nation, as well as King Carl Gustaf’s Golden Jubilee.

On the morning of National Day, Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar joined Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel as they opened the Royal Palace of Stockholm to free public entry, while Prince Carl Philip later attended the changing of the guard at the Royal Palace. The Crown Princess said:

So much of our Swedish history and our fantastic cultural heritage is gathered precisely in the royal castles. I am very happy that we can make it available – and that we can invite you here today.

We hope that you all, both children and adults, will have a wonderful day. With these words, we now open the gates to the Royal Palace and extend a warm welcome to you all!

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia attended the National Day celebrations in Strängnäs, where Gustav Vasa was elected King in 1523.  The King gave a speech:

Today is a big day. We celebrate Sweden’s 500th anniversary as an independent nation. And this is where it started. On Saturday 6 June 1523, Gustav Eriksson Vasa was elected Swedish king in Strängnäs.

Since Gustav Vasa was elected, about 20 generations have been born, lived and handed over to the next. That could sound like a lot. But if you think a little, it’s almost the opposite. A person my age may have met six of these generations. Imagine what an outstanding development that has been achieved by every family member in Sweden. Everywhere in our country.

Everything eventually resulted in the state we have today. The foundation was laid for our vital, multifaceted and democratic society.

In the evening, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia were joined by the entire Royal Family as they rode in a carriages to attend a concert at Skansen; Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Princess Estelle, Prince Oscar, Prince Carl-Phillip, Princess Sofia, Princess Madeleine, and Christopher O’Neil. For the concert, the ladies changed into Sverigedräkten, Swedish National dress since 1983.

Later, the Royal Family joined King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia as they hosted a National Day Reception for representatives of the government, Riksdag, parts of the diplomatic corps at the Nordic Museum, instead of the Royal Palace.

„He was 1,90m, which was a lot.“
