The funeral of Princess Birgitta has taken place in Sweden.

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia and their royal family came together at the service which took place at Drottningholm Palace Chapel.

Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel joined mourners as did Prince Carl Philip, Princess Sofia, Princess Madeleine and Chris O’Neill.

The service and burial were private events, as the princess had always requested.

Birgitta, 87, an older sister of King Carl Gustaf, died on December 4th 2024 in Mallorca after a fall.

Her three children and six grandchildren led mourners at the service.

Following the ceremony, Princess Birgitta was buried at the royal cemetery in the Haga park outside Stockholm.

Her brother and three remaining sisters all sent wreaths of white roses.

Flags were flown at half mast at Drottningholm Palace while a book of condolences was opened at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Another special service took place on the day of the funeral, known as a seraphim ringing. Princess Birgitta was a member of the Order of the Seraphim and, on the day of her funeral, her coat of arms was taken from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences where it has been since she became a member.

It was moved to Riddarholm church, the order’s church, where it will now remain with the arms of other deceased members. A bell was rung as the coat of arms was installed.

As the day of the funeral drew to a close, the Swedish royal family shared another image of Princess Birgitta, this time playing golf which she enjoyed so much. It was accompanied by a simple message, reading ”Princess Birgitta Ingeborg Alice, in loving memory.”
