Queen Sonja of Norway, 87, rushed to hospital after 'skiing incident'

Queen Sonja of Norway, 87, was admitted to hospital after suffering a skiing-related injury, the Norwegian royal household revealed on Saturday.

The Norwegian Queen is said to suffer from atrial fibrillation which, according to the NHS website, is a heart condition that causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate.

Despite the hospital visit, the family – via Sweden Herald – have shared that the 87-year-old’s condition is not thought to be serious and she remains in good shape.

Following her visit to Lillehammer hospital, the palace shared that Queen Sonja – who is married to King Harald V of Norway, also 87 – has now been discharged with a normal heart rhythm.

In relation to her ski trip and related injury, the Norwegian Queen’s royal schedule has now been cleared of engagements over the coming weeks.

Since news of her injury broke, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre released a statement to NTB, a Norwegian news agency.

He said that he wishes the Norwegian Queen a speedy recovery “and hopes that she will soon be ready for new skiing trips”.

This comes after her husband previously fell ill during a holiday with his wife and, later, was fitted with a pacemaker last March.

Despite his health struggles over recent years, the Norwegian King is said to have no plans to abdicate. His second cousin, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, announced her abdication in late 2023.

The Norwegian Royal Family later announced that the monarch would, however, be scaling back his official duties – particularly due to his age.
