Queen Silvia sparkles in famous tiara – Royal Central

Queen Silvia of Sweden pulled out a historic tiara for a State Dinner in Stockholm. King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia are hosting the Finnish President for a State Visit, and Queen Silvia chose a notable piece.

She wore the Nine-Prong Tiara, also commonly referred to as Queen Sofia’s Tiara. This tiara features 580 diamonds and has nine prongs to top off burst and floral elements. Other gems can be swapped in but diamonds were worn for this latest appearance.

The tiara originally belonged to Queen Sofia, originally Princess Sofia of Nassau. She was the wife of King Oscar II, and had the piece made in 1860. It was officially recorded as part of the royal jewels in 1872, and she would frequently wear the piece.

The Nine-Prong Tiara joined the Bernadotte jewel foundation prior to Sofia’s death in 1913. This is a trust that holds many of the Bernadotte tiaras, necklaces, and other jewels- several members of the family will wear the same piece, as opposed to a piece “belonging” to or used solely by one person.

Queen Silvia also wore the Vasa Earrings, a pair of earrings that date back to the mid eighteenth century. Queen Louise Ulrika, the wife of King Adolf Frederik, originally owned the earrings.
