Queen Mary joins list of royals attending Pope Francis’s funeral

Queen Mary of Denmark will attend the funeral of Pope Francis, joining royalty from across Europe for the solemn mass.

The Danish queen will represent her royal family at the funeral which takes place on April 26 2025 at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City.

In 2018, Mary, then Crown Princess of Denmark, was received by Pope Francis at the Vatican along with her husband, Frederik.

Every other royal family in Europe, apart from that of the Netherlands, will send a representative to the funeral for Pope Francis. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, who was born in Argentina like Pope Francis, have decided to remain at home for King’s Day celebrations although they have requested that the national festivities be put back an hour as a mark of respect for the late Pope.

The Prince of Wales will attend the funeral on behalf of King Charles. His Majesty met Pope Francis just days before his death when the Pontiff welcomed The King and Queen Camilla for a private audience during their time in Italy.

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians were the first royals to confirm their attendance. King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain, another Catholic royal family, have also confirmed their attendance on Saturday.

Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco will be in attendance; Monaco will also observe three days of mourning.  Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg will also be there.

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden have also confirmed that they will be at the funeral while the Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein will also be present.

Pope Francis died on April 21 2025, just hours after greeting the faithful in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday.
