King Frederik and Queen Mary hosted the first New Year’s banquet of their reign and the new consort certainly made a sartorial statement for the milestone. She wore gems that form part of Denmark’s Crown Jewels for the event.
Queen Mary chose to represent Danish design with her gown. Her deep green dress, by Birgit Hallstein, features a lace decolletage and full-length sleeves.
As a formal event, the Queen of Denmark wore two different chivalric orders. Her Majesty wore the Collar and Star of the Order of the Elephant, the oldest chivalric order in Denmark, as well as the Badge of the Order of the Dannebrog. She also wore a new family order, King Frederik X’s Portrait Order.
It was Queen Mary’s tiara that grabbed the most attention, though. She chose the tiara from the Danish Emerald Parure, a major set from the Danish Crown Jewels. This emerald and diamond parure cannot be taken out of Denmark and can only be worn by the current Queen of Denmark for formal occasions.
The ribbon-style tiara has 67 emeralds set amongst 2,650 diamonds. In the 1840s, the then-Queen of Denmark, Caroline, made several changes to the Crown Jewels. She added several emeralds to this tiara, giving it the substantial sparkle it now has.
Queen Mary did not leave the tiara on its own, though- she also wore the diamond and emerald bow earrings from the parure.
Given that she only wore the tiara for the first time in April 2024, Queen Mary is wearing this tiara well!
