Queen Margrethe’s Naasut Tiara | The Royal Watcher

Happy Birthday to Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who celebrates her 85th Birthday today! The exuberant Danish Sovereign for 52 years until her Abdication last year, Queen Margrethe has worn many splendid Heirlooms from the Swedish, British and German Royal Families, but one of her favourite jewels has been the Naasut Tiara!

When Queen Margrethe II celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 2012, the people of Greenland gifted her this striking Gold and Diamond Tiara, created by Nicolai Appel from gold coins minted for the International Polar Year, which were extracted from the Kirkespidalen mines in Greenland.

The Greenland Gold Tiara was created in collaboration with Queen Margrethe, and is composed of floral motifs which represent flowers from Greenland. The Tiara can be broken down into five brooches and hairpins, and has a pair of coordinating gold earrings.

Queen Margrethe debuted her new Naasut Tiara at the following year’s annual New Year Court at Christian VII’s Palace in Amalienborg, one of the only times she did not wear either Pearl Poiré Tiara or Danish Emerald Parure for the Gala during her Reign.

A few years later, Queen Margrethe wore the Naasut Tiara for the State Banquet she hosted at Amalienborg Palace during the Icelandic State Visit to Denmark in 2017.

Queen Margrethe wore the Naasut Tiara again the following year with the Diamond Rivière and Queen Josefina’s Diamond Brooches for Crown Prince Frederik’s 50th Birthday Gala Dinner at Christiansborg Palace.

A few years later, the Naasut Tiara was among all of Queen Margrethe’s Jewels on display in the ‘A Queen’s Jewelry Box/En Dronnings Smykkeskrin‘ Exhibition at the Amalienborg Palace Museum for her Golden Jubilee in 2022.

While Queen Margrethe seems to have retained use of the Floral Aigrette Tiara following her abdication, the Naasut Tiara is now the next larger piece in her possession, and we would love to see her wear it with her Modern Turquoise Suite, which would contrast nicely with the blue and gold insignia of the Order of the Elephant.
