The Danish Royal Family has been sharing behind the scenes peeks of their holiday celebrations on social media as they always do. This week they have started to highlight some of the preparations that go into the New Year’s Levee.
The court staff have started moving the Rosenborg Wine that will be used on 1 January when Queen Margrethe will host a levee for the government. Each year, this specific wine is served on New Year’s Day. It is normally stored in the cellars of Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen.
Historically the wine originated in Bacharach by the Rhine in Germany and was brought by Queen Sophie of Mecklenburg-Güstrow in the seventeenth century. The wine was originally kept at Nykøbing Castle, and then the barrels were then moved to Copenhagen Castle years later. They were finally moved to Rosenborg Castle in 1731 where they remain to this day.
The wine has been diluted with other wines for centuries now, with specific barrels used to preserve the taste and notes of the original wine. However, by the early 1980s, the palace was forced to move the wine into a steel tank.
