Queen Camilla was presented with a rather unusual honour as the royal visit to Australia continued and said she would wear it ‘with pride’.

The Queen was made a member of the Order of the Teaspoon as she visited a charity that provides hundreds of free meals every week for those experiencing food insecurity.

Queen Camilla was given with a tiny silver teaspoon badge, topped with a crown, as she sat down with guests at the restaurant run by OzHarvest, the Refettorio, in Sydney.

It was awarded to her by OzHarvest’s founder, Ronni Kahn, who said the teaspoon is a reminder of the impact of random acts of kindness and how even the smallest gesture of support can make a huge difference to another person.

The presentation came during a very regal lunchtime pass which had seen Queen Camilla don an apron and help prepare the vegetarian meals, all made from rescued food.

Her Majesty put on the bright yellow pinny and got busy washing and chopping before picking nasturtium flowers to decorate the dinners.

She later joined staff, volunteers and regular diners to hear more about the impact of the project.

OzHarvest was set up in 2004 to use good food that would otherwise go to waste to provide meals for people who need support at that particular moment. It now uses over 250 tonnes of rescued food in projects across Australia every week.

The Refettorio restaurant in Surry Hills is a social collaboration project between OzHarvest and Food for Soul.

Queen Camilla visited OzHarvest in 2015 and was inspired by its work to become patron of UKHarvest in 2017.
