Queen Camilla may be the latest famous face to adopt an unusual jewellery trend spearheaded by Vogue, as she appeared to sport odd earrings on a royal engagement yesterday.
Flying solo, the Queen visited the Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service to mark the organisation’s 50th anniversary before she headed into Deacon & Son, a 175-year-old family-run jeweller in Wiltshire.
King Charles did not accompany her as he is currently lying low at Sandringham, after news broke last week that he is preparing to undergo a procedure for an enlarged prostatet this week.
While at the jewellery shop Camilla seemed to be wearing odd earrings, one a pearl pendant that she wore for her wedding to Charles in 2005, and another gold one adorned with gems.
A royal aide didn’t confirm or deny whether this had been a deliberate choice, merely stating: “It could be Her Majesty was following the mismatched earrings trend.”
During her second visit of the day Camilla responded to well-wishers who had come to ask after the King’s health, reassuring them he was “fine”.
She shook the hand of 86-year-old Jessie Jackson, who said the Queen was “lovely”, however her companion Nicky Jackson, 48, revealed they had forgotten to ask after Princess Kate as well.
Last Wednesday Kensington Palace released a statement confirming the Princess of Wales had undergone successful surgery on her abdomen and was recovering in hospital.
The Queen’s trusty pearl clip-ons have been worn on many royal occasions, but the fact her ears are not pierced meant she could not wear the traditional Coronation earrings for the ceremony last May.
Instead she opted to wear a clip-on pair of diamond earrings which include a triangular gold stud and round diamonds placed in a contemporary gold setting.
For her pre-Coronation portrait however it seems Camilla may have had the late Queen Elizabeth’s pearl, sapphire and ruby earrings modified so she could wear them in tribute.
