Pristine 1970 Ford Escort with a Royal connection hit’s auction for eye-watering sum

A PRISTINE 1970 Ford Escort has hit auction for an eye-watering sum – and it has a surprise royal connection.

The “riotous” classic is a throwback to the golden era of rallying and has been meticulously restored to keep it in tip-top shape.

Using a twin cam concept modelled on the engine that powered the legendary Lotus Cortina, the Escort added extra zip compared to its predecessor the Anglia.

And this particular car is fit for royalty, as just last year the owner was invited to exhibit it at the Hampton Court Concours last year.

The Concours of Elegance is a display of top-notch classic vehicles that takes place at the palace each year, with HRH Prince Michael of Kent serving as its patron.

This pedigree, along with the fact it has just 66,000 miles on the clock, goes some way towards justifying the Ford’s hefty asking price of £59,995.

The listing from auctioneers Car and Classic reads: “The last owner bought it 75% restored but needing a complete mechanical overhaul, and he reckons he spent just under £8500.

“He did such a decent job of it that it was invited to exhibit at the Hampton Court Concours last year.

“Looks, drives, and sounds just the way it should – absolutely riotous.”

The restoration work included uprated breaks, Contour bucket seats and, at some point, the chassis being re-shelled in a historically-correct body.

It also gives a nod to its rallying heritage with a matte black bonnet, Pirelli tyres and bubble wheel arches.

Viewings are by appointment only with the dealer.

It comes after a stunning 1960s MG roadster hit the market for just £10,000 while hiding an amazing bonus feature.

Meanwhile, a former RAF Land Rover went up for sale at a bargain price – and it has a very neat perk.
