King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain bid farewell to the Princess of Asturias as she embarked on a six-month training Cruise aboard the “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” from Cadiz on January 11th, as part of her three-year training in the Spanish Armed Forces.
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were in the Bay of Cadiz as the Princess of Asturias embarked on her training Cruise aboard the “Juan Sebastián de Elcano”.
This embarkation represents a significant milestone in her comprehensive training as heir to the throne of Spain and reinforces her commitment to the Armed Forces.
Princess Leonor will take part in this training cruise as part of her military education, sailing alongside 76 midshipmen and visiting eight countries on a six-month journey covering over 17,000 nautical miles.
According to the Naval Military School’s curriculum, midshipmen embark on the B/E “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” during the second semester of their third year of their degree to undertake a Training Cruise. A standard cruise can be considered a 6-month voyage to America, with a journey of about 20,000 miles and 155 days at sea.
During her stay on board, Princess Leonor will actively participate in the scheduled activities and share daily life with the rest of the crew. This training period will contribute to her personal and professional development, strengthening her commitment to serving Spain.
Following the mass celebrated at the Convent of Santo Domingo (Cádiz) and the procession of Our Lady of the Rosary (La Galeona), the Princess of Asturias and the rest of the midshipmen embarked on the training ship “Juan Sebastián de Elcano”.
The Princess of Asturias participated, as a first-class midshipman, in various seamanship training and manoeuvring activities, including mast climbing, on the training ship “Juan Sebastián de Elcano”.
The Princess of Asturias visited Cadiz City Hall, together with the rest of the midshipmen who are continuing their naval training on board the training ship “Juan Sebastián de Elcano”, and signed the book of honour.
The Princess of Asturias and her companions, at the San Fernando Navy Non-Commissioned Officers School (Cádiz) on the occasion of their incorporation into the Training Ship “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” to continue their naval training.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain were joined by the Princess of Asturias as they presided over the traditional Pascua Militar Ceremony at the Royal Palace of Madrid on January 6th.
The Princess of Asturias completed her year-long training at the Academia General Militar in Zaragoza in July 2024.
