Princess Margareta of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg’s Diamond Tiara

Today marks the 115th Anniversary of the Birth of Princess Margareta of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, who was born on this day in 1909! The Swedish Aristocrat who married the Head of the illustrious German Princely Family, Princess Margareta was a childhood friend of Queen Ingrid of Denmark decades before the marriage between their children, at which she wore this Diamond Tiara!

While it has been thought to have been loaned from her son-in-law, the Landgrave of Hesse, and since the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Fringe Tiara belonged to her mother-in-law, this Diamond Tiara of unknown origin may have been an heirloom of the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Family or borrowed from family or friends over several decades.

Princess Margareta most notably wore the Diamond Tiara for the Wedding of Princess Benedikte of Denmark to her son, Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berlebur, at Fredensborg Palace.

A few days earlier, Princess Margareta had worn the Diamond Tiara for a Gala Performance at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, sitting with members of the Danish Royal Family.

25 years later, Princess Margareta wore the Diamond Tiara for Prince Richard and Princess Benedikte’s Silver Anniversary Gala at Christiansborg Palace in 1993.

In 1994, Princess Margareta wore her Tiara for a Gala held to celebrate the Wedding of her granddaughter, Countess Maria of Solms-Laubach, to Hereditary Prince Stephan de Lippe at Schloss Detmold.

The last time Princess Margareta was seen wearing the Diamond Tiara was for the Wedding  of her granddaughter, Princess Alexandra of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Count Jefferson von Pfeil und Klein-Ellguth at Gråsten Palace in 1998.

The fate of the Tiara is not known since the death of Princess Margareta in 2005, but since the current Princess of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg wears a Diamond Spike Tiara, it seems that Princess Margareta’s Tiara us no longer in their possession.
