Princess Leonor reports for duty at start of year of naval training

Princess Leonor arrived at the Naval Military School of Marín in Ponteverda on Thursday, dressed in navy whites, to begin her training.

The future queen of Spain signed the registration book as she entered training, writing that “with great enthusiasm” she continues her military training. She added: “I am sure that I will have the opportunity to learn a lot and share many important experiences with my fellow graduates.”

She signed it as Leonor, Princess of Asturias.

The Spanish Royal Court announced that Princess Leonor will train there through December. After the holiday break, she will continue her naval training aboard the Training Ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, where she will undertake practical lessons while on a training cruise, visiting the Spanish naval fleet.

During her year of training, Princess Leonor will receive “the knowledge, principles and values that inspire the rules of conduct of the Navy,” according to the Royal Court.

Princess Leonor was received by the Commander/Director of the Naval Military School, Pedro Cardona Suanzes, and entered with the rank of Midshipman.

The future queen of Spain will only spend one year in naval training, and her program was specially designed by the Navy and the government to fast-track her education. For the duration of her time at the Naval Military School, she will room with third-year female midshipmen and learn at that level.

Following the eight months training with the Spanish Navy this year, next year Princess Leonor will complete her third and final year of military training with a stint at the San Javier General Air Academy to learn about the Spanish Air Force.

Princess Leonor completed her training in the Army earlier this summer, attaining the rank of Cadet Ensign.
