Princess Elizabeth in Yorkshire, 1949

Following their visit to Edinburgh earlier that year, Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh were on a Tour of Yorkshire on this day in 1949, 75 years ago, as part of an extended series of Tours around various parts of the United Kingdom.

Following several official engagements, Princess Mary, Countess of Harewood joined Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh for a Banquet at the Hotel Majestic in Leeds, during their Tour of Yorkshire.

On this day in 1949 a banquet was held at the Hotel Majestic for Princess Elizabeth (as she was at that time) and the Duke of Edinburgh in connection with The Great Yorkshire Show. This phot shows them being greeted at the front of the Hotel on 27th July 1949 by the Mayor of Harrogate Mrs Mary Fisher.

“After the banquet, Princess Elizabeth and her husband appeared on a balcony and waved to the townspeople gathered in the [Hotel] grounds.” – Hotel Majestic, Malcolm Neesam.

Princess Elizabeth wore the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara and King George VI Sapphire Suite.

Princess Mary wore Queen Victoria’s Sapphire Coronet.
