Prince William may be visiting Estonia today in his role as Colonel-in-Chief of the Mercian Regiment, however, the Royal Family have had an odd link with the country since more than 30 years ago.
In 1994, Prince Edward received a strange request for a top job at the eastern European country which was swiftly declined by Buckingham Palace.
The Duke of Edinburgh, who is 15th in line to the British throne, was reportedly once offered the chance to become king of Estonia, a then-newly formed country.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, a whole host of new countries were created in Eastern Europe.
One of them was Estonia, and in the country’s first elections, a political party called the Independent Royalist Party of Estonia gained eight seats in parliament.
The leader of the party decided to write to the Royal Family to ask if Prince Edward would become their king as they thought he was “perfect” for the role, the Sunday Telegraph reported at the time.
But the offer was declined by Buckingham Palace, which reportedly replied back, saying it was “a charming idea but a rather unlikely one”.
