Prince Philip’s hilarious two word remark about presenting award to solicitors | Royal | News

Prince Philip was famous for speaking his mind.

He was celebrated for his wit and often hilarious one liners – and a brand new one was revealed today.

Richard Palmer is a royal correspondent with 20 years experience of covering the House of Windsor around the UK and overseas.

He made his social media followers chuckle earlier as he unveiled what the late devoted husband of Queen Elizabeth II said as he was told he would be presenting a Queen’s Award to solicitors.

Richard Palmer wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Fond memories of Prince Philip today at the funeral of one of my friends, whose law firm won a Queen’s Award.

“Told he would be presenting the award to a firm of solicitors, Philip is said to have replied: ‘How ghastly’.”

And social media users loved it.

One X user said: “Hilarious biting wit. Thanks for passing it on. Really enjoyed it.”

Another X user replied: “So sorry for the passing of your friend.

“Thank you for the PP quip. The royal watching community sorely missed those days.”

“Straight talker. He’s missed,” said another.

The Prince – who passed away in April 2021 aged 99 – shocked and sometimes delighted the public with his comments which have on some occasions landed him in hot water.

After his passing Express.co.uk rounded up some of Philip’s most famous phrases which we have repeated below.

● “British women can’t cook” (in Britain in 1966).

● “I declare this thing open. Whatever it is.” (on a visit to Canada in 1969).

●”Everybody was saying we must have more leisure. Now they are complaining they are unemployed” (during the 1981 recession).

● “You are a woman, aren’t you?”(In Kenya, in 1984, after accepting a small gift from a local woman).

● “If it has got four legs and it is not a chair, if it has got two wings and it flies but is not an aeroplane, and if it swims and it is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it.” (at a 1986 World Wildlife Fund meeting).

● In Germany, in 1997, he welcomed German Chancellor Helmut Kohl at a trade fair as “Reichskanzler” – the last German leader who used the title was Adolf Hitler.

● “You’re too fat to be an astronaut.” (to 13-year-old Andrew Adams who told Philip he wanted to go into space. Salford, 2001).
